AMR Peak 100

Posted by Bill Seddon on June 10, 2012 at 3:20 PM

Rode the AMR Peak 100 today as the final Sportive in my Etape prep. I don’t think the 25 TT yesterday was ideal prep, especially trying to keep up with the speedsters Martin and John, but it had to be done.

Lovely weather, and a route that I thought was much nicer than Tour of Peak, my computer says a little more climbing as well at 10,500 feet ish in 104 miles. Riding with my Etape buddy John and our mate Dave our aim was to see how we felt and not go daft. John was on his new “ Van Heusen” bike :-) Made a big difference for him, and he kept up well on the climbs, allowing me just enough time for comfort breaks on the summits and a settling down while he caught up. I was riding well under threshold as the legs were a little heavy, but wanted to get the miles in. Feedstations were excellent, no waiting, plenty proper food, pasta, cold meats, cheese, cake etc. Tea and coffee and no rationing.

Some sharpish climbs, long drags and a lovely section through the Goyt Valley. Plenty recovery miles as well and some nice descents. Saw Graham and Alex many times, including as they ventured off alone having missed a turning, they rectified it and we saw that at final feed station of three, eventually passing us at another comfort break near Bakewell. Also saw Ade at feedstation 2.

Not a huge number of riders out, no groups to hang onto, but a ride I would certainly do again over and above Tour of Peak, Shall be an early night for me tonight! Great company on the ride, and again, a cracking route.

Really enjoyed this as I did last year, the atmosphere throughout is superb and , it was good not to feel like a cattle feed at the stations! Nice to do a bit for poorly kids too . Thumbs up to all at Action Medical Research :)

This is a fine route, mostly quiet, scenic roads and combines little chunks of Cheshire Cat (Gun Hill area), TOTP(out of Chapel elFrith) , Goyt Valley and some well planned linking sections.
The buffet lunch was high quality and good for riding on, but wouldn't suit those desperate for a fast time. For them, the three feeds could be completed in a few minutes each, but you'd miss out on the quality, which is a real plus compared to the poor Wiggle offerings. Thoughtful friendly organisers and a good charity cause, also.
Mam Nick was a surprise to me, I've only descended it previously,
and I reckon its at least as tough as Winnats. Bill S rode this well, despite the previous days TTT and Alex had to wait 4 minutes for me at the top, but then he posted a top level Strava time up there, after all!
We were back in event HQ at 4.20pm, despite some leisurely feed stations stops and a couple of extra miles off-piste. Amazed at Al's patience, over the top of the longer climbs!
I'd choose this over TOTP because of the quiet roads and the organisation - its just as demanding to ride. Probably just do both, though......strangely addicted to turning the pedals.
