As a fan of the spring classics and especially those that are cobbled I have been desperate to try and find any stretches of cobbles we have in the region. After reading an article in Cycling Weekly earlier this year that mentioned a cobbled climb near Laughton-en-le-Morthen I have been trying to track down its exact location. After a bit of detective work I found out it was near Roche Abbey so on Saturday morning I set off to find it.
After a couple of hours of riding and one wrong turn that added a couple of miles onto the journey I turned down into the road that leads to the Abbey and found them.
Map - The road that leads down from the A634 starts off with tarmac but then turns to cobbles.
I have read a lot about how hard the cobbles are to ride and how much toll it takes on the body and your bike and now I can really believe it. The cobbles at Roche Abbey probably only stretch for 1/4 of a mile but you really know that you've cycled over them.
After a couple of passes over them I thought I'd better not push my luck and headed back home. I now need to find some more so that I can create my own version of the Ronde Van Vlaanderen
