Real Ale Road Ride

Posted by Bill Seddon on December 28, 2011 at 4:45 PM

So having been promised 4 or 5 pubs, and a nice ride out into the Peal I dragged myself out of bed to ride up carr Lane to the meet point for 9.30.  Nice to see 6 others there,  Steve, Simon, Lee H, Paul, Mark, Ian .  Plan was to ride out to the cafe at Braithwell,  I say it like I know it,  but never ever been that way self propelled I believed the others.  Pace was decent,  I had 50 Peak miles yesterday but hung on ok.  Nice to chat with everyone on the way out.  As we apprached Braithwell,  ( another bit of Rotherham that sounds posher than it is)  rumours started of the cafe being shut.  Sure enough it was,  but no problem,  a garden centre somewhere toward Scunthorpe was open,  we headed off,  it was also shut.  We then set off back to Maltby into a nasty nasty headwind,  group got split up in Maltby, but then re joined.  we found the road with the most pot holes in the UK,  Mark, punctured,  we talked horse and squirell genitalia.  nb,  google wanking kangaroo.

Off up yet more subtle hills and wind,  I then punctured in Harthill,  CO2 everywhere,  I have crap replacement tubes with tiny valves.  Steve blew the tyres up with his lungs again.

Met up again by the windmills,  Paul then needed some tyre gas,  we then got back to Bolsover minus a couple who headed home.

No cafe, no pub,  bloody great :-)  Another puncture on the 7 mile trip home,  limped back and spent the afternoon sticking on patches.  54 mile ride for me,  4500 feet climb according to computer.  Have now got long valve replacements in the saddle bag,  and 30 Co2 cannnisters coming from Ebay for 25 quid.

Great ride out guys,  keeps me going trying to keep up with you,  all the time on the bike is less time eating a nd drinking, so got to be good.

Shall head out Friday into the Peal if weather ok,  legs too knackerd for full turbo tomorrow,  200 miles this week!

Firstly , thanks for blogging this ride so eloquentlky Bill, like it when other people contribute to these blogs, I need shutting up sometimes..

I think the excesses of Christmas had played on everybody and perhaps the thought of yet more drink wasnt attractive to anyone, so it was good to get some take up for a more conventional ride.
Really enjoyed the ride out TO Braithwell, must see if an alternative exists to the Maltby junction.

Real shame the cafe was closed, as its a cracker ! I think it was a good call not to extend the loop out to Oldcoates , as the route back would have been a real killer into that headwind.
Instead it was just a grueller, at times it felt like we were almost going backwards..punctures are a real pain at this time of year....Your Co2 cartridge put the fear of god into me when all the spokes started pinging..i retreated hastily from the wheel, glad it survived the way home.

Thanks all for another enjoyable ride
