Sunday Ride 30th May

What a difference the sunshine makes. After the cold, dark days of winter, spring and summer certainly sees the emergence of many bright and wonderful colours. They may not be as fragrant as all the other flowers and blossoms, but the myriad of colours sported by different cyling fraternities sure brighten up the roads.

Unfortunately, while on the Sunday club run, the cyclist who has been giving it some welly up a hill in pursuit of the bunch - tha's right, the one who now and again slips into race head mode when another club on bikes buzzes past - can become a little confused. This particular bee finds itself in the wrong swarm. After a phone call to find out where he has got to, and his having rejoined the correct hive, he is cheerfully reminded what bunch of colours he needs to look out for.

But, this is the point, the recent month or so of sunday club runs have been just that, a bunch. t's been good to have a chat, a laugh, and to work as team if the going gets a bit tough. Venturing off and sharing he experience of travelling a new route is that much more enjoyable than going it alone; if there's a wrong turn, so what, the chance to discuss it soon resolves the matter and you're off again. Then there's sitting in a cafe, watching somebody stuff a full english breakfast into their face and wondering whether it will be seen again; it adds a little bit of extra spice. Or, sitting at another cafe, basking in the blazing sunshine at the foot of the day's steepest and hardest climb makes it easier. Also, we all know how it feels to be head down into what feels like a wind tunnel, no problem, someone else is soon in front to take a turn at suffering. All of it done with no pressure and just for the fun.

Excellent. Looking forward to even more. :D

Really enjoyed the ride too. It was nice to get out for a change. I'd forgot what it was like to follow the Vern motorbike. I seemed to be going well until we got 3/4 way home and then the Darby engine blew the head gasket. Thanks Steve for the tow home and taking the branch for the team!!

"Both strange and encouraging really that as soon as i could sniff the home straight i was able to bury myself and sprint with Tom & Graham for the hilltops & time trial the last few miles into the headwind."

So, the wise old racer finally reveals the inner sprinter. We domestiques know our place.......

Beautiful writing Vern and what a cracking ride it was on Sunday gone , the return leg into the wind was tough certainly and it only needed a small gap to open off your back wheel for it to suddenly end up in a larger gap. Thanks to you, Martin & John for the regular tows back to the group ,hopefully in the coming months i may be able to return the favour.
