Is the time right for a little bit of easy going, no frills or great expectations rivalry?

Does anyone fancy the idea of a friendly, off road TT competition?

I have in mind, in the first instance, a little 7.5 miler that starts and ends at Woodend railway signal (on the Newton to Silverhill trail and does a triangl via Teversal and Pleasley (route can be found at www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=28062).

The basic idea is that it would be self timed and uses the average of your best 3 rides out of as many rides as you want to do.

People could post their times and through the magic of an excel file that I've already put together I could keep a leauge table.

It could run through to the end of February as a bit of motivation for winter training.  The route simply requires a bike that is not the skiniest of lightweight bkes/tyres; club CX bikes would probably be excellent.

If there's interest I can probably make this a lot more specific.  There are also other trail users to consider....

Good idea Vern , and i would certainly be up for it when im back on the bike

Obviously we need to have a few guidelines for safety to protect other people using the trails...

ill have a think about how best to publish the league table on the site

Yes, safety is an issue.  There is a road to cross as well as other uses of the path.  I have found that a smiling and cheery hollering of HELLO or similar greeting from some way off leads to the path being cleared :D.  If it isn't, then so be it, pedestrian has right of way; it's an off road obstacle - being safe, polite and thoughtful is always more important than shaving a couple of seconds off the time; it's only for a bit of fun.  Steve, the table will probably sit in a blog that I can edit.  This could also be where people post their times.  If it goes in the results section then it would be left to you or Matt to keep it updated - perhaps a little unfair to add to you loads.... unless you want to give me editing rights to the site!!

Hi Vern

You got any plans as to when you might want to get this up & running?

I'm up for it...on one of my regular routes. At least you will all have someone to come last :). Think it is great idea and it is easy enough to manage safety if you just are polite to other users as Vern says. At sometime, all of us will experience delays so it is the same for everyone....Look forward to receiving the information on logging times.
