Those of you who have ridden the Teversal Triangle recently will notice that Nottinghamshire County Council have been busy improving the existing trails as part of a new multi user trail from Pleasley to Rainworth. Further afield, NCC is also developing a new multi user trail from Clumber Park to High Marnham, which includes a new signalled crossing of the A614 that was installed last year.
Even better news is that beyond High Marnham a new section of cycleway (also developed by NCC) that crosses the Trent via Fledborough Viaduct was officially opened last Saturday. This provides a long awaited alternative to Dunham Bridge and links into the existing NCN Route 64 between Harby and Lincoln.
So far, news about the opening is difficult to find, which is strange considering how quickly most things appear on the web. Despite having followed the development of this section for a couple of years and having visited Fledborough Viaduct last October before work started, I was somewhat disappointed to have found out about the official opening after the event as I would have liked to have attended.
However, if anyone is up for a ride on the new section of path, we could easily arrange a car assisted Saturday Ride, possibly taking in a section of the Water Rail Way and a stop at the excellent Barn Nursery and Tea Room at Washingborough.
The Railway Ramblers website has most information about the new trail and two snippets from the news pages are presented below.
All we need now is a link from Bolsover to NCN Route 6 at Clumber Park…
April 2010. High Marnham to Pyewipe Junction, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. The substantial Fledborough Viaduct has a secure future now that it has been converted into part of a cycle trail. The whole of the former GCR trackbed between High Marnham and Pyewipe Junction (just west of Lincoln) is now a cycleway, with the designations being NCN647 for High Marnham to Harby, and NCN64 for Harby to Pyewipe Junction. The viaduct is a giant amongst viaducts, comprising 9 million bricks, 59 arches and four central spans over the River Trent. The official opening (or, strictly, re-opening) is scheduled for 5 June 2010. (Ralph Rawlinson)
November 2009. High Marnham to Skellingthorpe, Nottinghamshire/Lincolnshire. There is currently a railway path of 4 miles from Harby to east of Skellingthorpe, near Lincoln, which is based on the former Great Central line from Clipstone Junction to Lincoln; this now forms part of NCN64. This month, contractors working for Nottinghamshire CC were encountered west of Harby, where they were extending the trail a further 5 miles back to High Marnham. It looks as if the extension will take the trail over Fledborough Viaduct, which in these parts offers a very rare crossing of the River Trent. (Bob Hipgrave and Jeff Vinter)

Update 10/06/2010 - I've found some pictures of NCN647, arranged west-east. I would have popped these on as images, but I can't get them to work - click on the link to open.
