As a relative newbie to this cycling lark I've tinkered with my own maintenance so far.  I'm sure there are plenty in the club who have a wealth of knowledge on all things technical etc.

Would there be any value in an evening of basic maintenance tips for newbs?  Things like brake set up, indexing, changing cables etc?

Not a bad idea at all Bill

We could use this to generate a bit of extra club funds....do you think you would be willing to pay a little? would save quite a bit for you in the long run

Although i don't know where we could stage any maintance forums/instructionals i'd be happy to show folk how to sort out gear indexing issues, brake set up,cable replacement, worn out parts replacement etc etc.

In my many years of bike 'tinkering' and self building dozens of bikes up i'd say there's 3 catergories of maintance......

1/Easy= Bog standard weekly checks that need no special tools and any one can do e.g gear indexing tweaks, brake set checks, headset check and allen key bolt checks.

2=Medium knowledge/skill = Cable replacements and gear mech swaps do need a quailty pair of cutters, cassette swapping that requires the correct splined tool/whip and chainset/BB checks and swaps that again need the correct extractors and spanners. This level does require a few quid to be spent on various tools/gizmos but d.i.y bike fixing is rewarding.

3= This level can often include an expensive trip to a bike shop because wheel building, headset pressing/fitment requires expensive tools and a skills.

Level 1&2 are all d.i.y/shed jobs that anyone can do. Think of them as a 'service/m.o.t' for your trusty bike and hopefully it should avoid an expensive trip to a bike shop.

Yep I'd shell out omething for it,  the likes of Evans etc charge for their bods to show you this.  I'm sure it couldn't be too hard to find a venue?  I reckon I could find a friendly local sports company who would let us use their premises.
