I have sent an enquiry to http://www.thesportscientist.co.uk regarding there mobile Vo2 max tests for an idea on price. I thought we could do this on a thursday night at one of the turbo sessions. When I get the information back I will post again with prices and see if we have enough interest to make it worth doing. This test will also establish our max heart rate which means we can all train more efficiently. Cheers Craig

Gordon at The sports scientist has come back to me with a price. If we can get a minimum of 6 people it would be £45 per person. The only problem is he wouldn't be able to do it in 1 session on a thursday night. If we had a weekend slot he would be able to do it at that price. I can provide a venue for a weekend slot at no charge at my house. Plenty of space for more than 6. Do we have any takers and if so when would be a convenient weekend? Cheers Craig

I'd be up for that, lactate threshold would be very useful.

Member Posts: 166 | I'd be up for it too but wondered if Paul might be able to arrange something through the Sheffield Uni ? I think Paul is qualified to do the testing too so think as he is good enough to coach us then maybe ask him as an option ?

Member Posts: 28 | I'd like to be involved in this. Just bought new HR monitor to try and increase training efforts when I do get the chance to train so knowing VO2 max would help.

Sounds good Simon. I was just trying to get the ball rolling as it has been mentioned before. You asking about setting max heart rate reminded me. How was the cross?

Re: max testing Sheffield Hallam Uni do a full testing procedure through their CESE centre, can enquire the price for you, but it aint going to be cheap as it involves gas and lactate analysis? If you want i'll put people through a max test on my portable rig, cost for a basic Max test is £20, if you want lactate testing as well cost is £35, regardless of numbers, will take about 40mins, so Thurs evenings will be tight! We may need somewhere we can access during the day, but this again depends on numbers. Cheers

Member Posts: 166 | I'd like to do a full lactate test and VO2 sounds reasonable to me. Would you be able to do the testing in a squash court ? Sounds strange but I have a few contacts at Creswell Leisure Centre and would be able to secure a mornings hire if it would be any good - power supply no issue if needs be ?

We can do the tests at my place no problem. We have plenty of space. When do you want to arrange it for Paul

There are several valid ways of obtaining a reliable lactate threshold figure and one of the most convenient and cheapest is to use power testing. VO2max can also be inferred within a small range (+-5%) using the same methods. This is not as accurate as lab/blood tests, but has been demonstrated to be just as useful for training and coaching purposes and is widely used. You wouldn't need to own a powertap or other on-bike system for this - it can be done using BC wattbikes, which Steve can arrange to loan out for an evening. HR as well as power figures can be generated for your training plans, if you have a HR monitor. I can give you research details, tables and formulas, or you can find them in the forum and article areas on TrainingPeaks.com or in "Training and Racing with a Powermeter" by Allen and Coggan PhD.

PS - It looks like Paul can offer he same process for a modest cost, so that will be a good option for a few. Three or four wattbikes for an evening will also deal with 8 riders, if they do the warm up/prep part of the session on their turbos.
